Often times, individuals have been the theme of many prize-winning photos. Still, portrait photography isn’t only about taking a picture of a face. It is also about making a person or group of people come alive within the picture by showing them at their greatest.

A good portrait picture beats the convention and is able to catch moods and perspectives of the subject like never seen before. However, typical family or one-person portraits are also clicked and they are fit for family albums.

A perfect upclose shot with a clear focus on the person’s face is what gives portrait photographs that touch of class. This can be attained by adjusting camera settings to blur the subject’s background so that his or her face gets optimum focus. A wider aperture used in a camera can give ideal results for this aim. One the other hand, it is judicious to shoot with a normal aperture if focus on the background is as important as on the subject, which is usually the case in outdoor photography.

Paucity of ideal light for a good photograph is a common problem faced by the photographers. However, some important photography guidelines if sincerely followed can yield that ideal portrait photograph. A facial profile of a person sitting by a window looks extraordinary and appealing, particularly when daylight brightens a part of the face. A reflective surface can be employed to highlight the other side of the individual’s face. However, Studio lighting can also be tuned to fit the light needs for high quality portrait photographs, and thus many photographers prefer to shoot such photographs inside studios.

The last but perhaps the most significant aspect of portrait photography is to make the subject feels at home. Technical wizardry in photography will work only when the subject is comfortable and relaxed, and projects his or her true self before the camera.
